Letter from Executive Director
2010-07-27
We hope you are having a great Summer and matches have been able to attend one (or more) of the many activities we have offered, such as the Bullfrogs' games, tailgate party and Marine activity. And we look forward to seeing everyone at our annual Summer Picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at Green Isle Park in Allouez.
While our year is going very well achieving higher quality matches, offering more activities, and having a more consistent message with donors; an area for improvement is recruiting more mentors. We currently have more than 100 youth on our ready to be matched list - and approximately 75% are boys. We need mentors… especially male mentors.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is very different from other youth organizations because while we could - and would like to - serve thousands of youth in our community; we can only serve more youth if we have mentors. Ultimately, we need mentors to succeed!
How can you help? It takes three simple steps.
1. Tell someone about our organization. What we do and/or why you're a mentor.
2. Ask this person to consider becoming a mentor. Explain what a wonderful experience you've had with your
youth and/or our organization.
We gain mentors via word of mouth, so please spread the word. Our goal is to gain 35 mentors before year-end (only 7 per month). If each reader asks one person to become a mentor, we should have hundreds by year-end.
"I don’t have time" is a common reason you may hear when talking to others. Re-explain how fulfilling it is to spend time with youth and how you find the time. Re-explain the quality impact we are having on youth. Show them pictures or videos from our website.
People are seeking community involvement. They may not know the impact our organization can have on their life, the youth's life and the many other lives for years to come. Help provide this experience to others.
