Site-Based Mentor and Youth of the Year

2010-06-01

Jaime “Jay” Ramos and his youth, Donovan, have been matched in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Site-Based program for three years. The match started at Pioneer Elementary School in 2007 and continued this year as Donovan transitioned to Parkview Middle School.

It is evident in Donovan’s face how much he appreciates the time he spends with Jay. Donovan lights up when he talks about his mentor. Donovan states, “I like to be with Jay because he helps me when I have homework and we play a lot of fun games like chess.” Donovan further describes his mentor as “funny, active and really tall!” It is clear how much Donovan truly looks up to Jay.

Donovan isn’t the only one who enjoys being matched. Jay states, “The best way to make a difference in someone's life is to create a strong one-to-one relationship. Donovan and I get along great. We both have a lot of the same interests and a similar personality. I look forward to our time together during the week. We play games, draw pictures and talk. It's a wonderful chance to recharge and see the world through the eyes of a youth. It's such a privilege to be a part of Donovan's life, and I am grateful to Big Brothers Big Sisters for having the program in place to make it happen.”

It is evident that both Donovan and Jay truly enjoy their time together. Both enrich each other’s lives, as well as enrich the Site-Based program. Big Brothers Big Sisters is honored to work with such a wonderful match. Thank you Jay, for all you do – you truly embody what it means to be a mentor. As Donovan states, “I thank you big Jay because you are kind and a great mentor!”

Congratulations Jay and Donovan for being our Site-Based Match of the Year!
