Internship with Site-Based Program

Position: Internship with Site-Based Program

Duration/Hours:One to two semesters; ten hours per week/120-140 hrs per semester

Shift/Work Days:Afternoons and early evenings; flexible schedule M-TH

Openings:Two to three

Requirements for position:
Vehicle:Access to reliable transportation on a regular basis
License:Class D – Regular license required
Qualifications: Prefer student in human services field of study: Psychology, Social Work, or Human Development. Education majors also acceptable. Bilingual a plus.

Goals and responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance and support to the Site-based program.
  • Oversee three locations by performing monthly assessments, planning activities, providing assistance to Bigs and Littles, and communicating with coordinators.
  • Assist with matching process from inquiry to closure.
  • Aid in planning and facilitating training sessions. Develop resources for Bigs.
  • Develop other miscellaneous aspects of the Site-based program.

Workload:

60% match support
30% matching process/record-keeping
10% development of new projects and ideas


Objectives:

 

This internship with Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a practical and comprehensive understanding that transitions academic knowledge of human growth and development, cognitive processes, personality traits, and social issues to practical applications. 

The matching process allows the intern an opportunity to determine levels of biological, cognitive, and social development in prospective clients/volunteers.

Match support provides the opportunity to recognize progression and setbacks in biological, cognitive, and social development of current clients.

Involvement in the site-based program aids in recognizing and understanding social issues Northeast Wisconsin faces such as poverty, diversity, crime, and substance abuse.

The position greatly enhances written and verbal communication skills.

A college student is exposed to a work environment that depends on effective and timely communication, reliability, diligent record-keeping, problem-solving skills, and professionalism. It is also an educational opportunity to examine a career with a non-profit organization.

Requirements for position

License: Class D – Regular license required

Qualifications: Prefer student in Business field of study: Marketing or Event Planning

Goals and responsibilities

  • Gaining experience in event planning
  • Assisting with recruitment
  • Creating marketing materials
  • Engaging in grassroots communications

Workload

50% Special Events
40% Recruitment
10% Marketing Development
(Focus of workload varies with time of the year)

  • The Intern will gain first hand experience with planning special events from start to finish.
  • The Intern will have the opportunity to work with different mediums to recruit volunteers.
  • The Intern will learn creative ways of marketing with limited funds.
  • The Intern will have the opportunity to greatly enhance written and verbal communication skills.
